Why Clédevie Uses a Wood Cap, FSC Packaging & No Plasticost
A look inside Clédevie's packaging choices — wood caps, FSC-certified boxes, glass bottles, and why we skip plastic entirely. Sustainable beauty for Singapore, Malaysia and beyond.

Most nail polish bottles look similar from the outside — glass, a cap, a label. Pick one up, though, and the differences start. Ours is capped in real wood. The box it ships in is FSC-certified and printed in soy ink. There's no plastic shrink-wrap, no plastic outer sleeve, nothing added just because it's cheap to mould. None of that was an accident, and none of it was the easy choice. Here's why we made it anyway.
Packaging Is Part of the Formula, Not an Afterthought
It's easy to formulate a clean, vegan, 21-free polish and then package it in the same plastic everything else comes in — most brands do exactly that. We built Clédevie around a simple idea: a product isn't "conscious beauty" if the thing it arrives in undoes the point. Up to 95% of our formulas are bio-sourced. The packaging around them had to match that standard, not quietly ignore it.
The Wood Cap: Wenge, Walnut, or Cherry — Never Plastic
Every Clédevie bottle is capped in real wood — wenge, walnut, or cherry, depending on the piece — never a moulded plastic cap dressed up to look premium. Wood is renewable, biodegradable at the end of its life, and genuinely different to hold: it doesn't have the slightly hollow, synthetic feel of injection-moulded plastic. It's a small detail, and it's also the first thing anyone notices when they pick up the bottle.
What FSC Certification Actually Means
FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, an independent, international body that certifies wood and paper products as coming from responsibly managed forests — ones that aren't over-harvested, that protect biodiversity, and that respect the rights of local and indigenous communities who depend on them. An FSC label on a box isn't a vague "eco" claim a brand gets to self-award; it's a traceable certification, audited back through the supply chain. Our boxes carry it, and so does the wood in our caps.
Soy Ink Instead of Synthetic Dye
The printing on our packaging uses soy-based ink rather than petroleum-based synthetic dye. Soy ink is lower in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), biodegrades more readily, and makes the paper easier to recycle once the box has done its job — a small swap, but one more place plastic-industry defaults quietly show up if you don't choose against them.
Glass Bottles, Made to Keep
The bottle itself is glass, not plastic — heavier to produce, more expensive to ship, and also infinitely recyclable without degrading in quality the way plastic does after a few cycles. A glass bottle is also simply nicer to keep. Several of our customers reuse empty bottles for other things entirely once the polish is gone, which is exactly the outcome packaging like this is meant to invite.
Why This Matters More in Singapore and Malaysia
Plastic isn't an abstract problem in this region — it's a visible one. Singapore's Zero Waste Masterplan has pushed packaging waste into the national conversation in a way few other markets have matched, and Malaysia spent years as one of the world's largest destinations for imported plastic waste, a fact that's shaped how seriously eco-conscious shoppers here read a brand's packaging claims. A beauty brand selling into Singapore and Malaysia doesn't get to treat "sustainable packaging" as a vague marketing phrase — shoppers here are more likely than most to actually check.
FAQ
Does FSC-certified packaging cost more than standard packaging?
Generally yes, which is exactly why so few brands choose it — it's a genuine cost decision, not a free marketing claim.
Is a wood cap as durable as a plastic one?
Yes, when properly sealed and finished — wood has been used in premium cosmetic packaging for this reason for years; it's a material choice, not a durability compromise.
Does glass packaging make the bottle more fragile to ship?
It requires more careful packing than plastic, which is part of why many brands avoid it — but it's also part of why a glass bottle feels, and lasts, differently once it's in your hands.
The Takeaway
None of these choices — the wood, the FSC certification, the soy ink, the glass — were the cheap or easy option. They were the ones that matched what we were already claiming about the formula inside. A 21-free, vegan, bio-sourced polish in a plastic bottle would have been a shortcut. We'd rather the packaging tell the same story the product does.
